Smoke alarms are a vital part of fire and life safety. Most contractors and electricians are fully aware of what the requirements may be, but on occasion, we receive calls from homeowners conducting minor renovations who just want to be sure they’re doing the right thing.

Location of smoke alarms:

Smoke alarms are required in every bedroom, and in “ancillary spaces and common spaces not in dwelling units in a house with
a secondary suite.” [9.10.19.1(1)]

They are also required at every level in a home, including bedrooms. It is also worth noting that smoke alarms are generally required in the areas that a person in a bedroom may travel to exit their home or dwelling. [9.10.19.3(b)(ii)]
